Sustainable Tourism Takes Root in Oakhurst with the Inaugural Oakhurst Facelift® Event

Oakhurst, California, set the stage for a groundbreaking voluntourism initiative on October 5, 2024. The first annual Oakhurst Facelift®, an event inspired by the original Yosemite Facelift® founded by climbing legend Ken Yager in 2004, rallied over 56 volunteers who devoted their day to cleaning the Oakhurst River Parkway Trail and the nearby Lewis Creek Trail. The outcome was nothing short of impressive, with nearly a ton—1,800 pounds—of trash removed, enhancing these vital community spaces just in time for the bustling Oakhurst Fall Festival.

From enthusiastic high schoolers from the Yosemite High School Eco Club to spirited retirees, the diverse group of volunteers exemplified a community united. Their collective effort cleaned up highly trafficked trails after a busy summer. This event echoes the vision of Ken Yager, whose commitment to conservation through the Yosemite Facelift® has significantly impacted Yosemite National Park and now inspires similar actions in its gateway communities.

The success of this cleanup was significantly boosted by the generous support of local businesses and organizations, including dedicated volunteers from the Oakhurst Rotary Club. Bee’s Bakery Cafe kicked off the day by energizing volunteers with hot coffee and fresh pastries, setting a positive tone for the hard work ahead. Meanwhile, EMADCO provided essential tools like dumpsters and gloves, crucial for the day’s tasks. Discover Yosemite facilitated smooth transportation to the trail sites, ensuring that all volunteers arrived safely and ready to make a difference.

Brooke Smith, Director of Sales and Marketing, shared a particularly inspiring story: a father and daughter team focused on removing every shopping cart from the creek. Their success, achieved without heavy machinery, highlighted the profound impact individuals can have on their surroundings. “Witnessing the overwhelming support from our community members and seeing how many people cared enough to help clean up really brought tears to my eyes," said Smith. This sentiment underscores the emotional and communal benefits of engaging in sustainable tourism practices.

The inaugural event’s success has set a high benchmark for future endeavors. With plans already in motion for the next Oakhurst Facelift®, scheduled for the first weekend of October 2025, the anticipation is building. The organizers aim to expand the event to include more participants and foster deeper community partnerships, enhancing the scale and impact of this sustainable initiative.
