One might find it hard to believe that shopping has a history in the southern Yosemite region. But alas, shortly after the rush for gold ebbed to a dull and dreary life of prospecting, some settlers found that supplying the masses, who picked at the ground and cut the huge Sugar Pine trees, with beef, produce, and supplies for their work was much easier and more profitable. Provisioning communities like Fresno Flats, Raymond, Grub Gulch and others sprang up around the Sierra foothills. "Shopping" in the region was born.
Visitors today can find more modern fare and "provisions" for those high Sierra hikes, camping at Bass Lake, or snacks for eating back at the room. Gifts and
souvenirs as well as some of the finest art in the world can also be purchased. Check with local Chambers of Commerce for more listings.
Shop for classic art in galleries and gift shops. The history of our past is not only found in museums and historic sites, but in the thrift shops and "collectibles" stores of the region.
